How to Write a Weekly Report with Codex in 20 Minutes
Turn scattered notes, Slack threads, and spreadsheet rows into a polished weekly report — with charts, highlights, and a PDF your manager can skim in two minutes.
Most weekly reports fail for one reason: you spend Friday afternoon formatting instead of thinking. You already did the work — stand-ups, ticket updates, sales numbers, customer calls. Codex turns that raw material into a structured deliverable: executive summary, wins, blockers, metrics, and next steps — often in under twenty minutes.
What Codex needs from you
Codex is not a mind reader. It is a partner that organizes, writes, and formats when you give it inputs. Before you open ChatGPT, gather three things:
- Bullet notes — what you shipped, what slipped, one-line customer feedback.
- Numbers — a CSV export, a screenshot of a dashboard, or a pasted table from Excel.
- Audience — who reads this? Your manager wants decisions; your team wants context.
A prompt that actually works
Vague prompts produce vague reports. Use a deliverable-first brief — the same pattern we teach on our how-to-use guide:
"Build a 2-page weekly report PDF for my engineering manager. Section 1: executive summary (3 bullets). Section 2: shipped items with ticket IDs. Section 3: metrics table from the attached CSV — include week-over-week % change. Section 4: blockers and asks. Use neutral tone, 11pt, company header placeholder."
Notice what is missing: you did not ask Codex to "write a good report." You named the format, sections, data source, and tone. That is how partners work — clear brief, clear output.
From draft to final in three passes
- Structure pass — Review headings and order. Move blockers above metrics if your manager reads bottom-up.
- Accuracy pass — Ask Codex to verify every number against the CSV. Flag anything it cannot confirm.
- Polish pass — Shorten the executive summary to three lines max. Add one chart if the data supports a trend.
Common mistakes (and fixes)
- Too much narrative, not enough numbers. Add: "Every claim in section 2 must cite a metric or ticket ID."
- Report looks generic. Share last week's PDF as a style reference — Codex matches layout and section names.
- Friday panic. Keep a running notes doc Mon–Thu. Paste it Friday; Codex does the assembly.
Make it repeatable
Once you have a report you like, save the prompt as a template. Our prompt library includes weekly-report starters you can copy. Better yet, install a document Skill from our Skills page — Codex can export polished PDF or DOCX with consistent styling every week.
Weekly reports should not eat your Friday. Give Codex the raw inputs, review the deliverable, send it — and go home on time.
