Codex Skills for Non-Developers — Install Playbooks Without Writing Code
Skills are reusable instruction packs for Codex — PDF exports, slide templates, spreadsheet checks. You do not need GitHub fluency to start; you need one good Skill and a five-minute setup.
Skills sound technical — they are not. A Skill is a playbook file (SKILL.md) that tells Codex how to handle a recurring job: export a polished PDF, fill a slide template, validate spreadsheet columns. Developers publish them on GitHub; you copy the ones that match your work.
Why Skills beat long prompts
Without Skills, you re-paste the same instructions every Friday: font size, section order, export format. With a Skill installed, you say "Run the weekly report Skill on this CSV" and Codex already knows the rules. Prompts are one-off; Skills are muscle memory for your partner.

Setup in plain steps
- Open Codex in ChatGPT (see Try Codex).
- Pick a Skill from our directory — start with one that matches your weekly task.
- Follow the repo's install note (usually: add the Skill folder to your Codex skills path, or paste SKILL.md when prompted).
- Test with a small file — one-page PDF or ten-row CSV — before running a full catalog.
Skills + prompts together
Skills handle how; your prompt handles what. Example: pptx Skill knows your template; your prompt says "Q3 results, highlight APAC growth, 10 slides max." Combine with starters from our prompt library.
When you outgrow defaults
Teams often customize a Skill once — add company colors, legal footer, mandatory disclaimer. You can edit SKILL.md in plain English; no compiler required. If you maintain a catalog of Skills internally, the open Agent Skills spec keeps them portable across Codex, Cursor, and other tools.
